The Perfect Mother’s Day Gift

With Mother’s Day right around the corner it is nice to share something she will love. A special mom deserves a special gift.  I have some ideas that may help you determine what is just the perfect gift for her.

The first question I have to ask you is: Do you know your mom’s love language?  If you aren’t sure what I am talking about, check out the book The Five Love Languages by Gary Chapman. Does she feel the most loved with a nice gift, an act of service, quality time spent with you, words of affirmation, or physical touch?  First thinking through what makes her feel the most loved will help you determine what you can give her that will truly be about filling her cup.

Acts of Service

If she feels loved with acts of service you could spend the day cleaning for her, cooking for her, or even hiring a cleaning crew for the year for her.  Depending on your budget and the age of the kids, there is a growing list of options.  Small children could create a coupon book for their mom containing coupons for “cleaning up their room” or “helping with the dishes” or “sweeping the floor”.  These seemingly small acts of service will be a continual reminder to her that she is loved.

Quality Time

If your mom loves to simply spend time with you – plan a day of familiar things.  It’s not a day to try something new, but to do something she won’t have to learn so she can focus on being with you.  Try putt putt golfing, watch a movie, play cards, or whatever you may often do together.  Again, for small children, a coupon book for “one movie night” or “one lunch date” might be exactly what she needs.

Physical Touch

If your moms main love language is physical touch then be sure to spend the day with lots of hugs.  Plan a spa day complete with a mani/pedi or a massage.  End the evening with a movie and snuggles on the couch.  Her heart will be full.  Gifts that allow her to be close enough to feel your energy and also pampered enough by others will leave her glowing.

Words of Affirmation

If your mom comes alive every time you give her a compliment, definitely put thought into what you write in her card.  She will most likely keep it and cherish it.  In addition to that, you could have one of her favorite quotes framed or even make her a jar full of notes to pull out for the year.  The notes could have compliments, quotes, and things you are thankful for about her.  She will adore every word you have to say.

Gifts

If your mom tends to light up when you surprise her or give her any sort of gift, choose something tangible for Mother’s Day.  While I am sure she would love the gift of a Spa Day, an actual gift she can keep, see, and touch will remind her of your love every time she sees it.  It could be a necklace, a family photo, a new chair, or something completely random that she doesn’t even know that you KNOW she wants.

Yes flowers, candy, photos, spa days, a clean house, and all the classic Mother’s Day gifts can easily be paired with these more specific ideas.  In fact, they probably should be, because moms deserve it all.  But I am hoping my ideas here are thought provoking and help you focus in on something truly special for your one of a kind mom.
